The New Pier

Inverie’s new pier

For those of you who have visited Knoydart, you may be well aware that the state of our old pier left a bit to be desired! However, after several years of consultation and negotiation with many people, Monday 12th July 2004 saw the start of a new pier being built, here on Knoydart.

The new pier is a major construction project and has been designed in close conjunction with the community to make sure that it meets the requirements of the many boat users and boat businesses located here. Whilst we can’t minimize the visual impact of the structure, we have worked hard to get sympathetic detailing and to preserve what we can of the vegetation around the pier head.Construction of the new pier in progress

The Highland Council were responsible for co-ordinating the project with the design work being undertaken by Wallace Stone and Partners. After going out to tender, the contractors are Pierse Contracting Ltd.The old pier

The project cost over £6 million, with funding coming from Europe, the Scottish Executive and the Highland Council. From the community’s point of view, one of the huge advantages of the pier is that we won’t be responsible for owning it (and all the associated liabilities that we have with the current pier!) as well as all the practical aspects of improved access.
