Knoydart
When the Knoydart Foundation completed the buyout in 1999 it was with support from non-residents.
John Muir Trust, Chris Brasher Trust, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Scottish Natural Heritage and Highland Council all significantly helped return 17,500 acres of land into community control.
Donations, big and small, also came from individuals from across the country who bought into our vision of Knoydart residents working towards the betterment of the community and the land’s future.
That support allowed us to:
- Sustain and strengthen local services
- Improve the housing supply and enabling local people to access land and builds at affordable prices through the rural housing burden
- Create jobs for our growing population such as at the village shop, local butchery and ranger service.
- Improve long-term energy security through our hydroelectric scheme
- Create hundreds of hectares of new woodland and regenerate habitats on a landscape scale.
The spirit of that support lives on
When visitors support local businesses, respect our community and landscape, and learn about our story they contribute to keeping that spirit of external support alive.
You can continue to build on 27 years of community ownership by making a donation and becoming a Friend of Knoydart
