K10 events – September 2009
Saturday 5th September Mountain Rescue and hill guru extraordinaire Mick Tighe will be giving an illustrated talk on Knoydart’s past, with many archived images from the 1880s to the 1930s. These will include images from the days of the SOE, or Special Operations Executive (a precursor to the SAS). He’ll also be discussing his 30 years as a member of one of Britain’s busiest MR teams, Lochaber Mountain Rescue.
Monday 14th September Last chance to enter a picture in the Knoydart Photo Competition, with a top prize of £75.
Thursday 17th September For those who didn’t manage to make it over in March (not many did), this is a chance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the community buyout here in Knoydart, with some of those who helped make it happen. Here’s hoping for a better forecast than earlier in the year!
Images from 17th September
See above for some pictures of our celebration day. The event started with people actually getting here, which was better than the original day in March, when most folks were stranded in Mallaig due to the weather.
First off, Davie Newton, Foundation Chairman, gave an incisive speech to a packed village hall, followed by presentations to John Hutchison and Charlie King, both essential figures in the early days of the Knoydart Foundation. John and Charlie both gave entertaining speeches, as did John Watt, our keynote speaker. On then to the raising of the totem pole at the head of the pier, a culmination of months of effort and creativity by the community which was started at the music festival way back in March. Back to the hall for some food and a ceremonial cutting of a cake; rounded off by a guided walk through the woods.
A great day, and an opportunity for some familiar faces to reminisce about some stirring times, as well as have the chance to meet some of the newer members of the community who are pushing Knoydart forward into its second decade of community ownership.
